Mr. Plumly is a recipient of many other awards and honors, including seven Pushcart Prizes and fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Guggenheim Foundation, and the Ingram-Merrill Foundation. He has taught at many universities around the country, including the University of Iowa, the University of Michigan, the University of Washington, Ohio University, Princeton University, and Columbia University. He is at present a member of the Department of English at the University of Maryland. The poetry and literature reading series at the Library of Congress is the oldest in the Washington area, and one of the oldest in the United States. This annual series of public poetry and fiction readings, lectures, symposia, and occasional dramatic performances began in the 1940s and has been almost exclusively supported since 1951 by a gift from the late Gertrude Clarke Whittall, who wanted to bring the enjoyment and appreciation of good literature to a larger audience.
