   The Edison Laboratory Collection documents the experiments and operations of the famed inventor's laboratory in West Orange, N.J., from the turn of the century through the mid-1920s. Included is original 35mm nitrate footage of Edison's efforts to assist the War Department during World War I, educational films on the development of the electric light, as well as Edison celebrating his 75th birthday, talking on the radio, and meeting young protégées. Pioneering anthropologist Margaret Mead used film extensively as part of her research. The Library holds the full record of her ethnographic work -- field notes, manuscripts, photographs, and films -- and will now preserve the footage she and husband Gregory Bateson shot in Bali from 1936 to 1939. The Pew Charitable Trusts support nonprofit activities in the areas of culture, education, the environment, health and human services, public policy and religion.

This summer the Mary Pickford Theater presents a film retrospective in conjunction with the Library of Congress exhibition The Work of Charles and Ray Eames: A Legacy of Invention, featuring 26 films they made covering such disparate topics as toy trains, jellyfish, Indian textiles, algebra, and Jeffersonian democracy.

The Library of Congress is celebrating its 200th anniversary on April 24, 2000. Ms. Baker's black-and-white photograph, "Inquiring Minds," features three young children using a computer at the Liverpool Public Library. Her photograph won based on its composition, its technical quality and its portrayal of both print and electronic library resources. Ms. Baker will receive $1,500 and a visit to Washington, D.C., which will include a special tour of the Library of Congress during its Bicentennial celebration in April 2000. The Librarian of Congress's Prize ($500) was awarded to Robert Riddle of Lawrenceburg, Ky., for his photograph, "Enlightenment," a quiet composition of a single reader in the Kentucky State Capitol with its grand main staircase in the background. The photo was submitted by the Lexington Public Library. The ALA President's Prize ($500), chosen by ALA President Ann K. Symons, was for a black-and- white photo, "Reaching for Knowledge," by Susan Matsubara of Lexington, Ky.

The Swann Foundation awards one fellowship annually (with a stipend of $15,000) to assist ongoing scholarly research and writing projects in the field of caricature and cartoon. Completed applications are due February 15, 2001, and notification will occur in spring 2001. The fellowship covers the 2001-2002 academic year. To be eligible, one must be a candidate for an M.A. or Ph.D. degree in a university in the United States, Canada or Mexico and working toward the completion of a dissertation or thesis for that degree, or be engaged in postgraduate research within three years of receiving an M.A. or Ph.D. from an institution in one of those countries.

  Diaries, Articles, Speeches, the latest result of the collaboration between professors Benestad and Halverson, is the companion volume to Edvard Grieg: Letters to Colleagues and Friends, introduced at the Library of Congress in 2000. Edvard Grieg (1843-1907) was a composer whose work brought worldwide recognition to the music of Norway. His Peer Gynt suites (1876) are the most familiar of his compositions. Mr. Benestad served as professor of musicology from 1965 to 1998 at the University of Oslo, and is a preeminent expert on the life and music of Edvard Grieg. The program, presented under the auspices of the Gertrude Clarke Whittall Poetry and Literature Fund, will be at 6:45 p.m. in the Mumford Room on the sixth floor of the James Madison Memorial Building, 101 Independence Ave. S.E. Tickets are not required. Michael Burkard's eight collections of poetry include Unsleeping (2001), Entire Dilemma (1998), and My Secret Boat (1990). He is the recipient of a Whiting Writers' Award, the Poetry Society of America's Alice Fay di Castagnola Award, and two grants from both the New York State Foundation for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts.

  The Scholars' Council will advise Dr. Billington on future appointments for five senior-level chair positions at the Kluge Center: (1) American Law and Governance, (2) Societies and Cultures of the North, (3) Societies and Cultures of the South, (4) Technology and Society, and (5) Modern Culture. In addition, it will advise Dr. Billington on suitable recipients for the Kluge Prize of $2 million designed to recognize outstanding lifetime achievement in the Human Sciences. The council will also suggest ways both to enrich Library of Congress resources and to make the best use of the Kluge Center's upcoming Post-Doctoral Fellows Program enabling younger scholars to use the library's collections.  Eddie Pennington, the son of a coal miner, also learned to play guitar from Mose Rager, but he stayed home in Princeton, Kentucky, to become a county coroner and funeral director. Music was a part of his family heritage. Relatives say that his great-great grandfather, Edward Alonzo Pennington, was a fiddler who was unfairly convicted of murder and who played a tune still played today called "Pennington's Farewell" as he sat on his coffin watching the hangman prepare the noose. Eddie's father played fiddle and exposed his son to songs about the life of a coal miner. Today, Mr. Pennington continues to play this ornamental instrumental style, enlivening his public performances with humorous stories about his experiences as a funeral director. He has recently been featured on stages at the National Folk Festival, as part of the Folk Masters series at the Barns of Wolf Trap and on the Masters of the Steel String Guitar Tour.

 Congress authorized the Library of Congress to develop and execute a congressionally approved plan for a National Digital Information Infrastructure and Preservation Program. A $99.8 million congressional appropriation was made to establish the program. According to Conference Report (H. Rept. 106-1033),  The legislation mandates that the Library work with federal entities such as the Secretary of Commerce, the Director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, the National Archives and Records Administration, the National Library of Medicine, the National Agricultural Library, the National Institute of Standards and Technology and "other federal, research and private libraries and institutions with expertise in telecommunications technology and electronic commerce policy." The goal is to build a network of committed partners working through a preservation architecture of defined roles and responsibilities.

 Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.) in reference to the American History and Civics Education Act (S.504), a bill that is sponsored by Senator Alexander and other members of the Senate. Senator Alexander chaired the hearing. The bill would establish "academies for teachers and students of American history and civics and a national alliance of teachers of American history and civics." Billington told Senator Alexander that the Library has been reaching teachers and students directly since 1990, when it began its American Memory program as a pilot. Since then, its award-winning American Memory Web site has provided, at no charge, access to millions of rich primary source items relating to the history and culture of the United States, including presidential papers, photos, films, music, maps, baseball cards and manuscripts. Another education initiative of the Library that Billington described is the American Memory Fellows Institute.
