The traffickers make people leave all belongings behind so they can fit more people in. Now imagine destroying the traffickers’ business model by having a recruitment and resettlement office in Calais to attract healthy young migrants into jobs with vacancies, and bringing them safely over the channel to a new life- do you really think they’d shell out to traffickers instead? It would be win-win. We get desperately needed people to fill vacancies, the traffickers are put out of business. Look at Australia and their policy of transporting refugees to an asylum prison on the island of Nauru - this is costing Australia £480 million per year, or £4.3 million pounds per person held there. We've already agreed to pay the Rwandan government £120 million before a single refugee has been transported there - and we all know how the cost of government projects balloon to many multiples of the original budget projections (Millennium Dome, Hinkley Point C, Trident Renewal, HS2, etc.)
