This is so sad and what about medical confidentiality, how are the rights of deaf people being upheld if by default family members have to interpret? It's not really an informed choice. Teach sigh language in schools and ensure every public service has enough trained staff, the same as we have H&S reps etc. BSL has its own structure and syntax and its not as simple as writing it down in English- it's like asking you to read French, if your 1st language is English. You may have a basic understanding of the other language, but in such critical times is that really fair either for the Deaf person. It is very sad and the service needs to be improved without a doubt......however.....I would prefer to be the one to tell my dying elderly parent they were going to die rather than a stranger they had only met a few minutes earlier..
