There was and never will be anything 'Smart' about them, they are hugely unsafe and very confusing. Between J 11and 11a North on the M1 is a prime example, there are loads of accidents, lanes merge or not depending on the hard shoulder running lane being open and its all on a left hand bend with little or no visibility, how not to design a motorway junction, it's a disaster. Smart motorways aren’t the problem. The problem is drivers who aren’t paying proper attention to their surroundings. Smart motorways are really easy to understand if you try. If you can’t understand them then you really shouldn’t be driving. As for the incidents on live lanes then this is a different conversation. All smart motorways should have the technology to close the cranes automatically. Unfortunately I have witnessed far too many drivers ignoring the Red Cross over the lane just so they can gain an extra few metres in traffic.
